Our client Thurman will be released

We’re incredibly grateful to share that our client, Thurman, will be released early this year.

When we took on this case, Thurman had been sentenced to 35 years for a DUI offense (driving under the influence) and an additional 10 years for evading arrest (he fled on foot; thankfully, no one was injured). It goes without saying that those were serious mistakes. But we also believed the punishment was not entirely proportionate in relation to the crime (in the Netherlands, you usually get a fine for a DUI).

At his hearing, we presented evidence of who Thurman is today, not just who he was at one of the lowest points in his life. In the years since, he has taken meaningful steps to address his substance abuse, grow, and take accountability. His struggles were rooted in a deeply difficult period following a tragic loss, and he has worked hard to turn his life around.

Thurman also had something truly special behind him: support letters from six correctional officers (!) supporting his release and highlighting his work ethic, character, and the effort he has consistently put in during his time inside. That kind of support says a lot.

The Parole Board agreed that change matters.

We don’t have an exact release date yet, but Thurman is expected to come home this year and that’s something worth recognizing.

*Thurman served 8.5 years on the DUI and 3 years on the evading arrest
