Merel Pontier studies law in Rotterdam when she starts writing with an American prisoner. Clinton Young has been on a death cell in Texas since he was nineteen, for a double murder he denies having committed. From a small concrete cell, he fights for his release. Merel gets caught up in the case. She decides to move to Texas and joins Clinton’s struggle. Shortly after her first visit to the infamous Polunsky prison, Clinton’s execution date is set. Then Merel makes a decision that will change their lives forever.
